Small habits that support a healthier smile

Healthy smiles are built through consistent everyday habits. Brushing twice a day, cleaning between teeth and keeping up with professional check-ups can help support oral health over time.

Brushing is about technique, not force

Most people brush hard rather than well. Scrubbing across the teeth wears down enamel at the gum line and can pull the gums back over time, which is why brushing harder often makes sensitivity worse rather than better. A soft-bristled brush held at roughly forty-five degrees to the gum line, moved in short circular strokes, cleans the plaque that actually causes decay and gum disease.

Two minutes is longer than it feels. Most people stop at around forty-five seconds, so splitting the mouth into four quadrants and giving each thirty seconds is a simple way to get closer to the full time. An electric brush with a timer does the same job if you prefer.

Cleaning between the teeth

A toothbrush reaches about three of the five surfaces of each tooth. The two surfaces facing the neighbouring teeth are where a large share of cavities and early gum problems begin, and they are only reachable with floss or an interdental brush. If flossing has never felt comfortable, interdental brushes are often easier to use consistently, and consistency matters far more than the method you choose.

What you eat, and how often

The frequency of sugar matters more than the total quantity. Every time sugar reaches the teeth, the mouth becomes acidic for a period afterwards, and it is during that window that enamel loses minerals. One dessert eaten in a sitting is gentler on teeth than the same amount of sugar sipped across an afternoon in tea or a soft drink.

Water between meals helps, and so does waiting a while after anything acidic before brushing, since enamel is temporarily softened straight afterwards.

Signs worth acting on early

Problems caught at this stage are usually simple and inexpensive to treat. The same problems left for a year are often the ones that need a root canal or an extraction.

Where a dentist fits in

Home care controls plaque, but hardened deposits below the gum line can only be removed professionally, and early decay between teeth is generally visible on an X-ray long before you feel anything. That combination of your daily routine and periodic professional checks is what keeps most people out of the treatment chair.
